The Great Barrier Reef region, located along the north
east coast of Queensland, is approximately 2,000 km in
length and covers a total area of 349,000 sq km. Almost
the entire region (344,000 sq km) is encompassed within
the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. The Marine Park is
the largest of its kind in the world.
This ‘eighth' natural wonder of the world is a brightly
coloured kaleidoscope of hundreds of different corals.
They live in harmony and combine with a myriad of sea
creatures that have developed amazing roles and
relationships in adapting to this unique coral reef
habitat.
The reef is also a breeding area for a number of rare
and endangered species. Humpback whales come from the
Antarctic to give birth to their young in these waters.
